Scared of his own Shadow

It's late spring here in Brisbane, which means ...

... anything with a long, slithery tail should be avoided at all costs. We have some of the deadliest snakes on the planet residing right here in our little city.

On this occasion, however, the tail wasn't attached to a poisonous head.

And regardless the fierce look ...

... this cute little fellow was quite harmless, despite the ferocious title of water dragon. In fact, he was afraid of his own shadow and took off with that topsy turvy gait that makes them so endearing.

I encountered this little critter at the local hall during a get-together with some quilting friends on Wednesday. Part of the joys of living in a semi-rural area so close to the city.

Catch some other shadows on Hey Harriet's Shadow Shot Sunday.

Nice of him to sit still for a photo before he ran off.

Could have stepped on him in the first one, he blends so well with the floor pattern! Thanks for visiting.

Oh yes...I remember years ago I caught sight of a tail slithering around a corner into a bedroom and rang my husband to come home and collect the deadly snake....turned out to be a blue tongue....all the neightbourhood kids thought it was very funny! And thank you dear girl for your well wishes...they're appreciated so much.

He does have the look, if not the size, of the giant lizards of ancient times. I didn't know that Brisbane was merely a 'town'...

The long tail by itself is a little scary, but this is a cute little friend, nice enough to allow you to photograph him, too!

The second pop art style water dragon is very creative! I love these critters and I'm always chasing them around with my camera. I think it's cute that they often think that they're blending in so well with their backgrounds that we can't see them. Ha! Little do they realise! Hope you're managing to keep cool Robyn :)

We have a Blue-Tongue under our shed. He looks fierce too, but he's really quite a pet.

Every once in a while I see a small sand lizard run into the bushes here on my land, just 2 miles from the city...I've only seen a snake once in the 8 years that I've lived here, it was a friendly one at that.

Not much to fear here in my state, but living in Florida was a different story...my daughter always said she could never live somewhere where there were actually animals that would eat you...like gaters, panthers, black bears and wild bores...just sounds intriguing to me, but then I'm a country girl, unlike my city girl daughter.

Have a wonderful week!

oooh I know about your reptiles up that end of Aus - we met a hungry looking water dragon at Dream World under a table we were about to sit at for lunch. Needless to say we picked another table!! I too have been fooled by the blue tongue thinking it was a snake from behind.... gives me the creepy crawlies!
